How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description
5 min read · Updated September 9, 2026
The single highest-return move in a job search is tailoring your resume to each posting. A generic resume competes with everyone; a tailored one speaks directly to what this employer asked for. Here is how to do it fast and repeatably.
Start from the job description
Read the posting and pull out three things: the hard skills and tools it names, the responsibilities it emphasises, and the words it repeats. Those repeated words are what the recruiter — and their ATS — will look for.
Mirror the language where it is true
Where the posting’s terms genuinely describe your experience, use the posting’s wording. If they say “stakeholder management” and you call it “working with clients”, align to theirs. This is not dishonesty — it is speaking the same language, and it is what makes an ATS match.
Reorder for relevance
- Move the most relevant experience and bullets to the top of each section.
- Lead your summary with the specialism this job cares about most.
- Promote the skills the posting names to the front of your skills list.
- Trim bullets that are irrelevant to this role to make room.
Keep a master resume
Do not rewrite from zero each time. Keep one comprehensive “master” resume with everything, then create a tailored copy per application by cutting and reordering. It turns a 40-minute job into a five-minute one.
Tailor your resume to a posting
Paste your resume and the job description — Resumade scores the match and rewrites it for that exact role.
Frequently asked questions
- How much should I change per application?
- Usually not the facts — the emphasis. Reorder to put the most relevant experience first, mirror the posting’s key terms, and trim what does not apply. Ten focused minutes per posting beats sending the same resume everywhere.
- Can I automate tailoring?
- Partly. A tool can score your resume against a posting and suggest the missing keywords and a rewrite, which you then edit for accuracy. The judgement of what is true stays yours.
