Keywords are how a recruiter finds you in the ATS and how the software scores your match. They are not magic words — they are the skills, tools and terms the job actually requires. Here is how to find the right ones and use them well.
Where keywords come from
Every keyword you need is in the job description. The hard skills, tools, certifications and methods the posting lists are exactly what the recruiter will search for. Start there, not from a generic “top resume keywords” list.
Find the right ones
- List the hard skills and tools named in the posting (languages, software, frameworks, certifications).
- Note the responsibilities it repeats — those signal what matters most.
- Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves; prioritise the must-haves you genuinely have.
Place them so they count
Keywords work best in context, inside real bullet points and your skills section — not dumped in a list at the bottom. A keyword sitting inside an achievement (“built CI/CD pipelines that cut deploy time 60%”) carries both the term and the proof.
- Put the most important skills in your summary and skills section, where they are easy to find.
- Work the rest into experience bullets, in context.
- Use the exact term the posting uses when it is true of you (spelling and casing included).
- Never hide keywords in white text or repeat them unnaturally — it backfires.

- Do not invent it. If you have adjacent experience, describe it honestly in the posting’s language where the overlap is real. If it is a genuine gap, focus on the requirements you do meet.
