How to List Promotions on a Resume

Show the company once with your overall dates, then list each title with its own dates underneath, newest first. The formatter writes both common layouts so you can pick the one your resume needs.

  • Two layouts for promotions: stacked titles and separate entries
  • How to split bullets between roles
  • A formatter that works out the overall dates for you

Earlier role (optional)

Layout 1: company once, titles stacked

[Company] · [Start]–[End]
  [Title] · [Start]–[End]
  • [Result you achieved in this role]

Layout 2: each role as its own entry

[Title], [Company] · [Start]–[End]
• [Result you achieved in this role]

Layout 1: one company, stacked titles

The company appears once with your total time there, and each role sits beneath it with its own dates. It shows growth at a glance and avoids repeating the employer. This is the clearest layout when the roles are related.

Good: Stacked
Northline Logistics, Denver, CO · 2017–Present
  Operations Manager · 2020–Present
  • Redesigned the inbound workflow, cutting dock-to-stock time from 14 hours to 9.
  Shift Supervisor · 2017–2020
  • Led 12 associates and hit the shipping target on 96% of days.

Layout 2: each role as its own entry

Each title gets its own line with the company repeated. It takes more space, but it is useful when the roles were very different (a move from engineering to management, say) or when you want every title on its own line for an ATS. Most parsers cope with stacked titles; if you are unsure, this layout is the safe one.

Good: Separate entries
Operations Manager, Northline Logistics, Denver, CO · 2020–Present
Shift Supervisor, Northline Logistics, Denver, CO · 2017–2020

How to write the bullets

  • Put bullets under the role they belong to, so each shows what you did at that level.
  • Lead with the most recent role and give it the most bullets. Earlier roles can have fewer.
  • Show why you were promoted by what you achieved (results, scope, people led), not by writing “promoted” in a bullet.
  • If the promotion is the story, say it once in the title line or summary: “Promoted from Analyst to Senior Analyst after 18 months”.

Common mistakes

  • Listing only the last title and hiding the progression.
  • Repeating the same bullets for each role.
  • Giving the dates of the whole stay on every title, which makes it look as if you held them all at once.
  • Using a different company name or spelling on each line.

Frequently asked questions

How do I list a promotion on a resume?
Show the company once with your total dates, then list each title beneath it with its own start and end dates, newest first. Put the bullets for each level under that title.
Do I list the same company twice?
Either way works. Listing the company once with stacked titles saves space and shows growth. Repeating it on each line makes every title stand alone, which suits very different roles or cautious ATS formatting.
How do I show a promotion within the same job title?
If the title did not change but the responsibility did (a new team, a larger region), list one entry and add a bullet that describes the change in scope. If the level changed, for example from “Engineer II” to “Senior Engineer”, give it a separate title line.
What dates do I use?
The company line shows the span from your first start date to your last end date (or present). Each title shows only the time you held it, and the dates should join up without gaps.
How many bullets should each role have?
More for the recent, higher-level role, fewer for earlier ones. Three or four strong bullets for the current role and two or three for the earlier one is a common balance. Each should be a result, not a duty.
What if I was promoted several times?
List up to three or four titles under the company. Beyond that, group the early, junior roles in one line: “Previously: Associate, Analyst (2014–2018)”.
