Sales Representative resume example

A sales resume is a scoreboard. This example puts quota attainment, deal size, and ranking front and center, and shows the process, pipeline, CRM, methodology, behind the numbers.

What makes this resume work

  • Quota attainment (% of target) leads the most important bullets.
  • Deal size, sales cycle, and territory make the numbers legible.
  • CRM and methodology (Salesforce, MEDDIC) are named as keywords.
  • Rankings and President’s Club show you against your peers, not in a vacuum.

Keywords that help you pass the ATS

Work the ones that fit your experience into your resume, naturally, not stuffed.

How to write a Sales Representative resume

Choose the right format for a Sales Representative resume

Use a reverse-chronological format for almost every sales role. Hiring managers want to see your most recent quota attainment and territory ownership first, not a functional summary that buries your numbers. A one-page resume works if you have fewer than eight years of experience; two pages are acceptable for senior reps or those managing complex enterprise cycles.

Keep your layout clean and ATS-friendly: standard section headers, no tables or text boxes, and a readable font like Calibri or Arial at 10–12pt. Many companies run resumes through platforms like Greenhouse, Workday, or Lever before a human ever sees them, so avoid graphics and columns that scramble parsed text.

  • One column or simple two-column layout only — no infographic-style designs
  • File format: PDF unless the job posting explicitly requests a Word document
  • Margins between 0.5" and 1", consistent spacing throughout
  • Contact line should include LinkedIn URL and your city/state (full address is unnecessary)

Write a professional summary that sells your value immediately

Your summary sits at the top and does the job of a cold open — it needs a hook, a proof point, and a signal of fit, all in three to four sentences. Skip objective statements like 'seeking a challenging sales role.' Recruiters spend fewer than ten seconds on an initial scan, so lead with your specialty, a concrete result, and the type of sales motion you know best (inside, field, channel, enterprise, SMB).

Example: "Results-driven B2B Sales Representative with six years closing mid-market SaaS deals in the HR-tech space. Consistently ranked in the top 15% of a 60-person sales org, averaging 118% of annual quota over the last three years. Skilled in consultative selling, multi-threaded deals, and navigating 90-day procurement cycles. Seeking an enterprise AE role where I can expand an existing book and develop junior SDRs."

Write work-experience bullets that prove performance with numbers

Every bullet should answer 'so what?' Lead with a strong action verb, add the activity, then anchor it with a metric. Quota attainment percentage, average deal size, pipeline generated, number of accounts managed, ramp time, and win rate are all fair game. If your company restricts sharing revenue figures, use percentages, rankings, or growth rates instead.

Avoid vague phrases like 'responsible for growing accounts' or 'assisted with outreach.' Recruiters who hire sales reps know exactly what good performance looks like and will skip resumes that don't show it.

  • Exceeded annual quota by 23% ($1.4M closed vs. $1.14M target) in FY2023, finishing 2nd out of 34 reps in the Northeast region.
  • Built a cold outbound pipeline of $2.8M in six months using Outreach sequences and LinkedIn Sales Navigator, converting 11% of prospects to discovery calls — double the team average.

Include the skills and certifications recruiters and ATS systems look for

Sales job descriptions are keyword-heavy. Pull exact phrases from the posting and mirror them in your skills section and bullets. Separate hard tools from soft competencies and list certifications on their own line so they're easy to spot.

Prioritize tools and credentials that appear repeatedly across job postings in your target segment. For SaaS roles, Salesforce CRM proficiency is essentially a baseline requirement. Certifications from Sandler, MEDDIC/MEDDPICC, Challenger, or HubSpot Academy signal methodology fluency that many employers actively filter for.

  • CRM platforms: Salesforce (including Sales Cloud and reporting), HubSpot CRM, Microsoft Dynamics
  • Sales engagement tools: Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo.io, ZoomInfo
  • Methodologies: MEDDIC, Sandler, Challenger Sale, SPIN Selling
  • Certifications: Salesforce Certified Sales Representative, HubSpot Sales Software Certification, Sandler Training certification
  • Soft skills worth naming: territory planning, pipeline forecasting, contract negotiation, executive-level presentation

Handle education, licenses, and extras strategically

A bachelor's degree is listed as preferred in most sales postings, but it is rarely a hard filter for candidates who can demonstrate quota attainment. List your degree, school, and graduation year — no GPA unless you graduated within the past two years and it is above 3.5. If you attended college but did not finish, list the institution and years attended without a degree conferral date.

Add a brief 'Additional' or 'Extras' section for items that differentiate you: industry-specific licenses (Series 63 for financial services, state insurance license for benefits sales), language fluency if your territory is bilingual, and relevant volunteer board roles. Keep it to two or three lines — this section supports your case, it does not lead it.

  • State insurance licenses (Life, Health, P&C) are mandatory for benefits and insurance sales roles — list them prominently
  • Series 6, 7, or 63 FINRA licenses belong near the top for financial services sales positions
  • President's Club or similar recognition can go in a one-line 'Awards' subsection under experience or education

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing job duties instead of outcomes — writing 'managed a territory of 200 accounts' tells a recruiter nothing about whether you actually grew, retained, or lost that book.
  • Omitting quota attainment figures entirely, which signals to hiring managers that your numbers are not worth sharing and immediately weakens your candidacy.
  • Using a generic skills list packed with terms like 'communication' and 'team player' instead of naming the specific CRM, sales engagement platform, or methodology the job posting requires.
  • Sending a resume with an unprofessional or outdated email address, or leaving off your LinkedIn URL when your profile shows endorsements, recommendations, and President's Club recognition that strengthen your case.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Sales Representative resume be one page or two pages?
One page is the right target if you have fewer than eight years of experience or are applying for an SDR or inside sales role. Two pages are appropriate for senior account executives, regional managers, or anyone with a long track record of complex deals and multiple employers. Never pad a resume to fill a second page — every line should earn its space.
How do I write a sales resume if I missed quota?
Be selective but honest. You can frame performance relative to team average ('ranked 12th of 40 reps'), highlight a specific quarter or product line where you did hit target, or focus on pipeline metrics and activity volume if closed revenue is your weak spot. Avoid fabricating numbers — sales hiring managers verify attainment during reference checks and background screening routinely.
What is the best way to show Salesforce experience on a resume?
Name the specific Salesforce products you have used — Sales Cloud, CPQ, Einstein Analytics — rather than just writing 'Salesforce.' If you hold a Salesforce Certified Sales Representative credential, list it in both your certifications section and your summary. Mention a concrete use case in a bullet, such as building custom dashboards to forecast weekly pipeline, to show depth beyond basic data entry.
