Academic Resume Templates

An academic CV is not a resume: it runs long, lists publications and grants in full, and is read by a committee rather than a parser. These templates give that content structure — numbered section rhythm, serif headings, and spacing that keeps a five-page document navigable.

Best for: PhD candidates, postdocs, lecturers, researchers and anyone applying for faculty, research or fellowship positions.

Who an academic resume suits

Academic CVs are for PhD candidates, postdocs, lecturers, professors, research scientists and fellows, and for applications to grants, fellowships, research institutes and some government science roles.

How to lay out an academic resume

Order the sections by what the committee values: education, appointments, publications, grants and funding, teaching, conference presentations, service, and references (which are expected in academia). Use one citation style throughout, bold your own name in author lists, and separate peer-reviewed work from preprints and other output. Length follows content; number the pages and repeat your name on each. When you apply abroad, add a line explaining any grading system or degree title a committee may not know.

What to emphasise

  • Publications, grouped by type and cited consistently.
  • Grants and awards, with the funder, amount and your role.
  • Teaching: courses, levels, student numbers and evaluations.
  • Conference presentations and invited talks, with the event and year.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing peer-reviewed and non-reviewed work in one list.
  • Inconsistent or incomplete citations.
  • Sending a full academic CV to an industry job that expects a two-page resume.
  • Listing work that is only planned or in preparation without labelling it as such.
  • Leaving out service: reviewing, committee work and outreach all count for many committees.
