Chronological Resume Templates

The chronological (reverse-chronological) resume is the format recruiters read fastest and applicant tracking systems parse best: most recent role first, dates aligned, one column. These templates are built around that timeline, with a short summary above it and skills below.

Best for: Anyone with a steady work history and no major gaps — which is most applicants.

Who a chronological resume suits

The reverse-chronological format suits most applicants: anyone with a steady work history, visible progression and recent experience in the field they are applying to. Recruiters and applicant tracking systems are built around it.

How to lay out a chronological resume

Put experience straight after a short summary, newest role first, with job title, employer, location and month-and-year dates for each. Group promotions under one employer heading so progression is obvious. Older roles can shrink to one or two bullets, and anything more than about 15 years back can be summarised in a single line. Education and skills come after. If you worked for several clients through an agency or as a contractor, group them under the agency or a single “Contract roles” heading so the timeline stays readable.

What to emphasise

  • Your most recent role, with the most bullets and the strongest numbers.
  • Promotions and growing scope from one role to the next.
  • Complete, consistent dates.
  • A short summary that connects your track record to the role you want next.

Common mistakes

  • Listing jobs oldest first.
  • Giving an old role more space than your current one.
  • Leaving gaps unexplained when a one-line note (career break, study, caring) would do.
  • Repeating the same duties under every job instead of showing what changed as you progressed.
